transport

Average

transport_comments

As a small group of two, transport was provided by the guides who were also the drivers and used their own car. Given that there was a lot of driving (up to 8 hours/day), it would have been better and much less exhausting for the guide to have a separate driver.

accommodation

Below Average

accommodation_comments

The hotels in Tehran and Kashan were fine, and the Royal in Shiraz was great. Unfortunately, the hotels in Isfahan, Yazd and Kerman were disappointing with regard to both accommodation and helpfulness of staff. Also, the guide was accommodated elsewhere (and far away) which made communication with staff, most of whom had minimal English, even more difficult. (Unfortunately, our Farsi is non-existent!) Part of the problem may have been due to cost-cutting by the local operator (given that there were only two of us) as some of the hotels were changed relatively close to our arrival. We would have been happy to pay extra for better accommodation.

Not having them in our hotel or nearby meant that they had to get up much earlier for our long days. Also, they were not present at meal time to help us select and then explain our food.

improvements_comments

Apart from the above suggestions about accommodation and drivers, I think the itinerary could be modified slightly. For example, the spare day in Isfahan would have been better spent in Shiraz, especially after the long drive from Kerman. Also, it would have been impossible to adequately see Persepolis, Pasargad, Naqsh-e Rostam and the tomb of Cyrus the Great and still make the evening flight to Tehran. Fortunately for both us and our guide, we were able to change things around.
